WHAT IS A MOBILITY DEVICE? WHO IS A PEDESTRIAN WITH A DISABILITY?
Both Federal and State Legislation which passed in 2010 has defined what a “Mobility Device” is to mean a support cane, walker, crutches, wheelchair, scooter, or other device which may be necessary for use by a pedestrian with a disability when traveling.
“Pedestrian with a disability” means a person with a disability as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act, who may require the use of a mobility device, service animal, or white cane to travel on the streets, sidewalks, highways and walkways.
“Service Animal” means a service animal as defined by the Code of Federal Regulations
    (28 CFR
     36.104).
“White Cane” means a cane that is predominatly white or metallic in color, with or without a red tip, that is held in an extended or raised position.

Most municipalities (cities, towns, villages, townships, and even states) have passed legislation which states that a pedestrian with a disability has the same rights as any other pedestrian  to equal access and use of streets, sidewalks, highways, and walkways of that municipality.

WHEN IT HAS SNOWED WE ASK YOU TO BE A FRIEND OF PEDESTRIANS WITH A DISABILITY?
Most municipalities have passed laws which require homeowners, landlords, and businesses to shovel their sidewalks within 24 hours of a snowstorm. Be a friend of pedestrians with a disability and shovel your sidewalk as soon as you possibly can, don’t wait for 24 hours to pass after a snowstorm, and be sure to keep your sidewalk clean. Please also pay attention to the curb cuts and sidewalk ends. Having the ends of the sidewalk clear will help all to be able to use the sidewalks.   You will also help pedestrians with a disability to be able to get out and walk around or move around. Thank you for being a friend of pedestrians with a disability.

DO YOU HAVE A QUESTION?
If you have a question and you can not find the answer to it on our website please let us know. Feel free to e-mail us at joel@wsana.org or feel free to call us at 708-383-6258.

QUESTIONS TO SEE IF YOU CAN ANSWER
How many of you visiting  our website can answer the question, what is a Center for Independent Living and what services do they provide?
The next question is can you explain the difference between mentioning an autistic boy or saying a boy who has autism?
If you ask questions you must give answers. A Center for Independent Living is a federally mandated organization which usually has employees who have disabilities and are there to provide services to individuals with disabilities to live independently in the community of their choice. They have many programs and service which allow them to do this.
The second question is more involved to answer. No matter what your religion may be you are taught that all persons  are the same, thus to point out a person has a disability before you go ahead and point out that they are a person first is not acceptable. Although most forms of media do not follow this rule I urge you to visit our catergory “Preferred Terms” on our website.

PLEASE CONSIDER GIVING BLOOD
Many of the conditions that individuals with disabilities have at times requires for the person to have transfusions of blood. Since the first of the year our Executive Director as part of his medical condition has received 9 units of blood. If blood is not available then there is a problem. If you can not give blood ask your family or friends to give blood and help others.
